5 Tips to Identify a Safe Website

1. Check connection type

One of the ways to outsmart fake website is to check their HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) connection. You need to confirm the security status of the website by checking if the site is encrypted or not. An encrypted site always has Secured Socket Layer (SSL) added to the URL of that website displaying and ‘s’ after HTTP on the address bar in the browser as displayed in the picture below. The website URL must carry a https before you feel more secure.

2. Use Google Transparency Report

This is another way to determine whether a website is safe or not. Google Transparency Report allows you to copy the URL of that website and paste to view the reports on that website. It generates a report for you on the website and you can determine if it’s safe for you or not.

3. Check Contact page

One of the best ways to know who you are dealing with is to be sure they have a physical presence somewhere aside from the internet. Verify the website contact page and see if there is any contact address, phone number and how connected are they to the company on the website. The more detailed information you get on the contact section the more you are sure of whom you are dealing with.

4. Check Shipping and Return policy
If you are dealing with an e-commerce or merchant website, you need to check their policies on the services because any legitimate e-commerce company must have a Return and Shipping policies set up for their clients. You can try to verify if the policies are genuine and not flimsy in any way.


    5. Check Secure Site Seal

    Trust seals are like a certificate that tells you someone has actually passed a test or training for a professional knowledge. Trust seals are earned from secured internet companies that have been certified to be genuine globally. Most website showcases this to gain the confidence of their visitors that their website is genuine and not fake. As shown in the picture below, you can find the Trust seal on the homepages, login pages and checkout pages of websites that have been certified by those SSL companies.
